The recently established Hellenic Cyber Security Institute informs the public about the safe conduct of online transactions, especially in view of the Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and holiday season.
Incidents of fraud and theft of personal data in online shopping are commonplace, with over €12.5 million taken from consumers in the first half of 2023, according to the Bank of Greece.
Below are 10 rules that protect users:
- Use of complex passwords including lower and upper case characters, numbers and symbols. Change them regularly and avoid storing them on devices or browsers.
- Use certified security programs and update software.
- Transition to formal and secure online environments, identifiable through the protocol "https://www…”.
- Manually typing the bank's address for confirmation instead of the search results.
- Implementation of double identification for extra security.
- Enable electronic updates and telephone verification for each transaction.
- Avoiding the use of public networks during online purchases.
- Immediately inform the bank of any suspected code leakage or unjustified payments.
- Beware of messages from strangers encouraging you to change passwords or update your details.
- Continuous information and training on cybersecurity issues.
The President of the Institute, Ms. Stella Tsitsoula, stresses the importance of continuous education to address the growing challenges in the field of cybersecurity.
