Apple's Stolen Device Protection is an innovative feature that secures iPhone data and makes it harder for thieves to do their job. It was integrated into devices with the iOS 17.3 update and requires the use of Face ID (or Touch ID) scans and time delays before performing payment operations or changing account security when the device is away from established locations.

This feature reduces the risk of iPhone theft by requiring biometric scanning (Face ID or Touch ID) when the user is away from their usual places, such as home or work. When enabling the feature, the use of the password as an alternative method is prevented. In addition, time delays are imposed for certain security-related functions.

The Wall Street Journal reported in 2023 on a common thief tactic that involved tracking users as they entered a password so they could then steal it. The Stolen Device Protection feature effectively addresses this risk. With the feature enabled, Face ID or Touch ID authentication is required, as well as time delays, preventing access to sensitive information.

With Stolen Device Protection enabled, the thief would face significant obstacles. Requiring Face ID or Touch ID and time delays would prohibit him from accessing passwords and payment information, and would also add barriers to resetting and configuring the device. This provides valuable time for reaction, device tracking and security changes.

The feature requires biometric scanning (Face ID/Touch ID) without the use of a password for various functions when the device is away from established locations. In addition, actions such as disabling Lost Mode or resetting factory settings require additional time delays and Face ID / Touch ID verification.

To enable Stolen Device Protection, check that your device is updated to iOS 17.3 or later. In settings, go to Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode on older models) and enable the feature. To turn it off, follow the same steps and select Turn off protection, confirming with Face ID or Touch ID.
