Import music into iTunes and sync it to your iPhone

In addition to being an amazing media player, the iTunes app is also the means of syncing your iOS devices. By installing this particular app, (on OS X it comes pre-installed), there are certain settings enabled that many users are unaware of and may have ended up with duplicate files and other wonderful quirks.

The way we suggest to manage your music and your digital content in general is very simple. When you install the application you will need to make some settings.

Follow the route iTunes > Preferences > Advanced

The screenshot attached is from OS X, but it looks similar on Windows (Edit > Preferences > Advanced).

In the screenshot you can notice two options that are enabled during installation:

Organize your iTunes Media folder, which modifies the organization of your data in the iTunes Media folder. You can find this folder in the path written just above the two options, in our example (/Users/Username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media). For Windows users, this folder is created in My Documents >My Music. We suggest you disable it as in the instructions we provide it is not needed.

Copy files to the iTunes Media folder when adding to the library. This is the option that causes the most problems as it copies the tracks you add to the iTunes library by dragging them, resulting in double-recorded tracks. So disable this option as well.

We're done with the arrangements. Adding audio and video content to your iTunes library is an extremely simple operation. The app itself helps you add digital audio and video content that already exists on your computer, or purchase content, from the iTunes Store.

Add content from a computer to iTunes

It is very easy to add content that is already on your computer. iTunes supports almost all types of audio files, such as AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, etc. In addition, it can convert unprotected WMA files to one of the above formats. The steps to follow to import the files are as follows:

  • Open the iTunes app.
  • From the toolbar at the top, select File.
  • Then Add to library.

The iTunes Store has a wide selection of music, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, apps, free podcasts and more.

Sync Music on iOS devices

We've seen how we can easily add music to the iTunes app, now let's see how we can add that content and more Photo/Video to an iOS device.

Our first action is to connect our iOS device (iPhone/iPad) to iTunes, and from the Summary tab click on the "Manually manage music and video" option. With this action we avoid the automatic synchronization of the tracks, which exist in the library.

Most users are interested in selecting individual music tracks themselves to add to their device. This option gives them the power. Specifically, you can drag and drop music directly into the iPhone's library, without the need for syncing.

You can also delete music from your device without the risk of deleting it from your computer. Let's look at the steps:

  • Open the iTunes app.
  • Connect your iOS device to your computer.
  • In the "Summary" tab, tick the "Manually manage music and video" option.
  • Press the "Sync" button.

Then go back to your iTunes library, select the tracks you want to add to your iPhone/iPad and drag them into your device's library.

With a little practice the process will seem very simple in the future. With this very easy way you can transfer as many pieces as you want to your device. If you want to delete some of them, you just have to select them from the toolbar, Edit >Delete. Alternatively right-click > Delete.
